Thoughts on Health and Fitness

May 2, 2016 By Alecia Baptiste 2 Comments

37CB0NNMNCWe’re all busting our buns off trying to maintain or achieve “good health”.  Ok, I’ll speak for myself.  I certainly have.

Have we ever considered that our standards for beauty and health could be wrong? What if they aren’t realistic?  What if the reason they require so much time, attention and energy is because, our expectations are so high?

In the past, and in other cultures what has been considered healthy? What has been considered beautiful? Has that changed over the years? Does it change from culture to culture?

Does this obsession with health and beauty come from God, or is it a scheme by the enemy to keep us self-focused? As we keep our minds cluttered with thoughts of weight, BMIs, bikini-ready bodies, superfoods, calories, and so forth, do we miss out on connecting with God and people.  Ultimately, we miss out on the “life” we’re really craving.

Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink or about your body, what you will wear.  Is not life MORE than food and body MORE important that clothes?  For pagans frun after these things and your Heavenly Father knows you need them.  But seek first the kingdom and His righteousness, and ALL these things will be given to you as well.  Matthew 6:25,32-33

Could this also be said of how our body looks and our obsession with losing weight and being healthy?  Continue Reading

Do Something Good

little things become GREAT Things

I’ve been reading through the gospel of Matthew for the past few months, and recently read the parable  of the talents in Matthew 25.  As I pondered the actions of each of the servants, and the Master’s reaction to the work they did (or didn’t do), I realize that so often I’ve found myself like the servant who had been given only one talent.

He buried the talent that had been entrusted to him by the Master, because he was afraid of losing it.  As I consider his actions, I understand his fear.  Because he had only one talent, he had no room for error.  If he invested the talent and lost it, he would have NOTHING when the Master returned.  So he played it safe.  He made sure he would at least have the one talent he was given.

Often those who have been given fewer resources, and/or fewer abilities allow fear to keep them from taking risks because there is so much to lose.  There is no room for mistakes.  One wrong move could cause them to lose everything.Continue Reading

Encountering Jesus… in Walmart?

December 23, 2015 By Alecia Baptiste 8 Comments

christmas bells

Last night my daughters and I were doing some last minute shopping and had to drop by Walmart to pick up a gift that my parent’s sent us.   I hardly ever go to Walmart, but this time I’m glad I did!

We were checking out at the service desk, and I began to chat with the cashier.  I asked her how her christmas season was going.  She replied, “TERRIBLE!”  She talked about how mean customers have been to her.  She talked about people yelling at her and her having to work really long hours. She also confessed that she hadn’t done any of her own Christmas shopping.  She’s so tired, that all she wants to do is sleep when she’s not working.

Halloween–An Opportunity to Love

October 31, 2015 By Alecia Baptiste 2 Comments

Halloween is one of those controversial holidays in the Christian culture.  Some people preach against the evils of Halloween. Some people don’t want anything to do with it. Some pretend Halloween doesn’t exist.  Some find alternatives to Halloween–like Harvest festivals.  Some blindly join in the celebration arguing that it’s completely harmless.

I’ve done all of these at some point.

The truth is Halloween does indeed have pagan origins and many of the traditions associated with Halloween clearly remind us of that.  It’s also a time when evil is  glorified and  fear, horror, torment, murder and death are made light of–even celebrated.  The darkness associated with Halloween is very real!  So are the demons, witches, and other ghoulish creatures that are often dismissed as mythical creatures.

Without a doubt, all of this comes from the evil one–Satan.Continue Reading
