Confessions of a Mom with a Graduating Senior

April 28, 2014 By Alecia Baptiste 11 Comments

Today’s post isn’t written as Alecia, the homeschool Coach, but as Alecia–mom.  I hope you don’t mind me sharing my heart with you this week.

My oldest son and I just spent the weekend together, just the two of us.  I took him to an event where basketball players aspiring to play in college were able to showcase their skills in front of college coaches.  It was a great opportunity and  yet a very difficult environment to really show coaches your best.  Why?  Because everyone else was there to show their best as well.  I hated that my son’s basketball career, which has been so full of many amazing moments, had come down to that one day.  I hated that he had to enter the court as a gladiator before the glaring eyes of spectators to prove his value as a player.  That’s A LOT of pressure.

And yet.   I was so proud of the way he handled the pressure.  He did not cower before his competitors.  He stood strong.

Like a man.

That’s probably because he is a man.  (It’s so hard for me to admit it sometimes.)

When Reading is a Challenge

April 21, 2014 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

For most of us, reading is as natural  as breathing, but  it didn’t begin that way.  Children don’t enter the world reading.

Much like math, reading is a composed of a variety of skills that work pretty seamlessly together for most of us.  So when we are teaching our children to read, we often neglect some of the basic skills that a child needs to develop in order to read fluently with understanding.  Here are a few:

  • letter recognition
  • the ability to scan letters in the correct order
  • the ability for the eyes to scan back and forth across the page
  • sounding out individual letters and letter combinations
  • recognition of whole words
  • understanding reading

As I’ve worked with students, I’ve discovered two major challenges that students have:

  1. inability to read words
  2. inability to understand what is readContinue Reading

Meant for More

March 16, 2014 By Alecia Baptiste 3 Comments

Recently, I’ve been thinking alot about how to prepare for my children for life beyond our home.  I think of the struggles that I’ve had in getting comfortable in my own skin, and this journey of re-discovering who I really am.  I’ve been told what to do, and how to do it.  I was told to work extremely hard in high school.  Get good grades. And go to college.  That would assure me a “good job” .  So I did.  I took as many AP classes as possible.  I worked my buns off in order to keep my GPA as close to perfection as possible.Continue Reading

What are your burning questions?

March 5, 2014 By Alecia Baptiste 2 Comments

As I’ve been writing for the past few months, I’ve chosen to write on topics that I’ve either observed parents struggling with or that I’ve struggled with myself. I’m an observer and a thinker. I’m always thinking of ways to solve problems or trying to get to the root issue of problems. It’s just how I’m wired.  And I LOVE helping people.

So, I’d like to hear from you.Continue Reading
