The Danger of a Single Story

April 22, 2018 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

We must be intentional about exposing ourselves and our children to diverse stories.  Without this diversity, we end up with a flat and incomplete understanding of people which leads to stereotypes.  We end up with children who end up saying things like, “Mr. B you look like a gangster.”  One of my husband’s students said this after seeing him with baseball cap on which he wore backwards.  Or we end up with posts like this which was posted on a Homeschool FB group that I was a part of.  It was very offensive, and perpetuated ONE STORY.

It’s time to seek out diverse stories–even when they make us feel uncomfortable.

How Changing your Focus can Change Everything

IMG_1454I want you to imagine you decided you wanted to take a photo of a beautiful rose.  You turn on your camera, find the rose that you want to photograph, but then you turn your camera in the direction of a pile of trash that is near the rose.  You carefully adjust the focus, and the camera settings so that the item in view is clearly in focus.  Then you snap, snap, and snap several photos.  But you’re a bit annoyed!  There’s nothing but a pile of trash in your photos.  The rose is no where in site!IMG_1444

Again, no rose.

At this point, you’re convinced that your camera must be broken.

But is it?Continue Reading

Ideas for Serving as a Family

August 4, 2014 By Alecia Baptiste 5 Comments

“To serve should be a privilege, and it is to our shame that we tend to think of it as a burden, something to do if you’re not fit for anything better or higher.”  Madeline L’Engle

Service is the heart of our homeschool.  Basically, it’s the heart of our family.  ( In fact, my oldest daughter and I are in route to Africa to serve widows and orphan girls of Burundi. ) All that we learn, is learned so that we can better serve others.  All that we do, we do not simply for our own benefit, but for the benefit of others.

Serving is a great way to teach our children to be people of action, not simple philosphers who contemplate the complexities of the universe in their ivory towers.  Serving is a great way “road test” the ideas that we teach.  It reveals the relevancy of learning.  Serving has lessons of its own as well, and you can’t always predict the lessons that will be presented. Serving teaches our children to be generous, to give our best and to see other people as valuable and worthy of their time, energy, and material possessions.

Serving is all about loving.

Here are some ideas of how you can begin serving  TODAY:Continue Reading
