The Pathway to Healing

June 9, 2020 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

third way

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.  Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. 2 Chronicles 7:14-15

For hundreds of years, there have been cries to heaven for justice

From people of color

who have been mistreated

who have been treated as inferior

who have been murdered at the hands of those in power

who have been the victims of unjust laws

who have been stolen from over and over again

who have been told over and over again to be happy with the crumbs of society

who have been told that when a few of us thrive, we should be happy with that

who have been told that we are responsible for our own oppression

whose voices and stories have been silenced

I believe the God of Heaven hears and responds to the voices of the oppressed and marginalized.

He comes to their aid.

Our aid.

But I also believe that He not only wants to free the oppressed but also those who have benefited from our oppression.

God loves the oppressed and the oppressor.

The Danger of a Single Story

April 22, 2018 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

We must be intentional about exposing ourselves and our children to diverse stories.  Without this diversity, we end up with a flat and incomplete understanding of people which leads to stereotypes.  We end up with children who end up saying things like, “Mr. B you look like a gangster.”  One of my husband’s students said this after seeing him with baseball cap on which he wore backwards.  Or we end up with posts like this which was posted on a Homeschool FB group that I was a part of.  It was very offensive, and perpetuated ONE STORY.

It’s time to seek out diverse stories–even when they make us feel uncomfortable.

Attitudes and Values of the Kingdom of God

Matthew 5:3-11

He said:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
    for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
    for they will be filled.
7 Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
8 Blessed are the pure in heart,
    for they will see God.
9 Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

This summer I completed a devotional series on the Be-attitudes.  In Jesus’ sermon on the mount, he teaches us how to be true citizens of his heavenly Kingdom.  He shows us how to recognize people of the Kingdom.  His kingdom is not like kingdoms of earth.

We make his kingdom visible on earth.

An Invitation to pray for Healing for our Country

What if all the people of God joined together in prayer for our country?  What if we genuinely cried out to God to heal our land every time the National Anthem is played? What if this song which represents, America’s fight for freedom became the catalyst for true freedom?  What if this song and the flag, spurred God’s people to battle in the heavenly and earthly realms for our country and our world?

May we bow our heads in humility, and repentance, seeking the face of our God, asking Him to do what humans have been powerless to do–Heal our land.

This is what I plan to do every time the National Anthem is played.  Will you join me?StockSnap_L9MGC617HI
