How Changing your Focus can Change Everything

March 17, 2015 By Alecia Baptiste 2 Comments

IMG_1454I want you to imagine you decided you wanted to take a photo of a beautiful rose.  You turn on your camera, find the rose that you want to photograph, but then you turn your camera in the direction of a pile of trash that is near the rose.  You carefully adjust the focus, and the camera settings so that the item in view is clearly in focus.  Then you snap, snap, and snap several photos.  But you’re a bit annoyed!  There’s nothing but a pile of trash in your photos.  The rose is no where in site!IMG_1444

So you attempt this process again.  Being even more careful, and diligent about your camera settings.  Being careful to keep the camera steady.  Checking the light and the camera angle.  But again… you turn your camera towards the pile of trash, focus in and snap shot, after shot after shot.

Again, no rose.

At this point, you’re convinced that your camera must be broken.

But is it?Continue Reading

Our Homeschooling Journey–The Blessing of Community

October 28, 2014 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

canon photos 231Our homeschooling journey has been filled with many amazing experiences and we’ve had the opportunity to meet some great friends and wonderful people along the way.  One of the turning points in our homeschooling journey began when we joined Classical Conversations.  We had just moved into a new home and I was finally recovering from two years of being ill.

I responded to an announcement posted about Classical Conversations on a yahoo group that I’m a part of.  After responding to the post, I began dialoguing with the state manager about becoming a tutor for the program.  She mentioned to me the possibility of directing.  It sounded interesting to me.

I had been following the classical model of educating for some time and Classical Conversations put together the program that I was trying to implement for my children.  I was excited to have a system already in place that I could implement for my children, while also gathering weekly with other families for support and friendship.Continue Reading

Mornings Can Transform Your Day

August 25, 2014 By Alecia Baptiste 4 Comments

As you read my post title, you were either agreeing with a hearty, “Amen!” or thinking to yourself, “Oh! No! I’m a night owl!”  Until recent years, I certainly would have been in the second camp.  I’m not an early morning person, or a late night Owl.  I need my rest.  Everyone is better off when I get my rest.  I have, however, learned to get up early in the morning.  In fact, I actually cherish my morning hours.

The house is quiet, and peaceful.  There’s a cool breeze blowing outside.  The squirrels are scampering through the trees and the birds are chirping and tweeting merrily, “It’s a new day! It’s a new day!”  I love the freshness of mornings.  In fact, I believe mornings are a gift from God.  Just imagine if our lives weren’t separated into days.  I spend my mornings in quiet reflection.  Sometimes I sit on my deck and just enjoy “being”.  I enjoy watching the wildlife.  I feel the cool breeze blowing against my face and the listen to the rustling leaves.  I listen to what God has to say to me.  I pour out my heart to Him.  I write.  I read.  I  prepare myself to love and serve the wonderful family that I’ve been given.

This time isn’t a luxury.  It’s a necessity.  It’s also a great joy!
