The Pathway to Healing

June 9, 2020 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

third way

If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.  Now my eyes will be open and my ears attentive to the prayer that is made in this place. 2 Chronicles 7:14-15

For hundreds of years, there have been cries to heaven for justice

From people of color

who have been mistreated

who have been treated as inferior

who have been murdered at the hands of those in power

who have been the victims of unjust laws

who have been stolen from over and over again

who have been told over and over again to be happy with the crumbs of society

who have been told that when a few of us thrive, we should be happy with that

who have been told that we are responsible for our own oppression

whose voices and stories have been silenced

I believe the God of Heaven hears and responds to the voices of the oppressed and marginalized.

He comes to their aid.

Our aid.

But I also believe that He not only wants to free the oppressed but also those who have benefited from our oppression.

God loves the oppressed and the oppressor.

Grape Vines and the Spiritual Life

August 23, 2018 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

A grape vine in its natural habitat given ample water supply and nutrients is a vine which likes to climb but produce small bunches of tart grapes. It would rather use most of its energy making leaves and shoots. The shoots enable it to attach itsself to other plants or it can develop new root systems if in contact with the ground.

In short, a grape vine left to itself isn’t ideal for growing grapes. It takes cultivation by a farmer in order to create the conditions which produce an abundance of sweet grapes.

A friend of mine and her husband own a vineyard, and I remember her talking about the need for grapes to be under stress. Vines need to struggle in order to produce good quality grapes. But when the farmer puts the vine under stress, by making its nutrients scarce, restricting water, and pruning them back hard, and crowding them with neighbors, it focuses its energies on making grapes. Instead of devoting its effort in increasing its own size, it instead focuses on reproducing itself. That means making grapes. But in this process, the farmer must be careful not to over stress the plant. Over stressing will prohibit growth, grape production and makes it more susceptible to disease. So the farmer must carefully cultivate just the right environment which brings maximum fruit production.

Not enough stress= a large vine with lots of leaves but little fruit

Too much stress = a vine that won’t produce fruit

Either way, no grapes.

The Danger of a Single Story

April 22, 2018 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

We must be intentional about exposing ourselves and our children to diverse stories.  Without this diversity, we end up with a flat and incomplete understanding of people which leads to stereotypes.  We end up with children who end up saying things like, “Mr. B you look like a gangster.”  One of my husband’s students said this after seeing him with baseball cap on which he wore backwards.  Or we end up with posts like this which was posted on a Homeschool FB group that I was a part of.  It was very offensive, and perpetuated ONE STORY.

It’s time to seek out diverse stories–even when they make us feel uncomfortable.

Real Talk: My Bias Against the Donald Trumps of the World

October 2, 2017 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

successful white man

Donald Trump represents those that I’ve seen as my enemy:  A successful white man whose primary concern is to win at all costs!

It has been men like him who have exploited the poor and weak, who misuse and abuse women, who brutalized and stole from the Native peoples of America, and who enslaved and dehumanized my ancestors in order to maximize their profit.  These are the kind of people who have been a threat to my very existence.  Not that they are thinking and plotting against me or people like me in any particular way.  I do not matter to them.  I am just a pawn to be manipulated or a fly to be squashed.

And yet even as I consider my dislike and even fear of these men, I am reminded by the Holy Spirit that HE LOVES THEM, just as much as he loves me.  He treasures them, just as much as he treasures the sweet, gentle, kind and patient mother who cares for her infant.

I am reminded that these men are human beings, just like me.  No more. No less.
