Some Kids Ain’t Easy to Homeschool!

November 16, 2013 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

Have you found yourself homeschooling one of those children who is full of energy, and hard to keep focused? Is your child resistant to completing school work, and seems to be lazy? Is your child having a hard time reading words or struggling to understand what he or she reads? Does noise, lights, scents or other sensory input disturb and distract your child?

I have a kid like this myself, and  I work with students like these all of the time. From my experience working with these students, I’ve learned some tips on how to help them focus and complete academic assignments successfully. We even have some fun in the process!

1. Be a student of your child. Observe their triggers. What triggers anxiety, tantrums, or lack of cooperation.

2. Create a less distracting environment (especially for tasks that require great focus) Have your child help you set up this space. You may need to adjust the lights. They may need neutral colors. They may need to be in a room where strong scents are blocked off. For children who are distracted by noise, try having them listen to www.simplynoise.com on headphones. Using a study carrel could also help with distractions.

3. Adjust your expectations. Do what is reasonable for your child. Accept them as they are today. Trial and error will help you determine what is a reasonable expectation for your child. Once you determine what is reasonable, be firm and consistent. Continue Reading

Homeschooling’s Biggest Secret (Shh!!!! Don’t tell)

November 13, 2013 By Alecia Baptiste 2 Comments

One of the secrets of homeschooling is that it’s just as much about educating the parents as it is about educating our children.  As we consider our goals for homeschooling our children, we are forced to take a look at our own lives. Are we where we want to be? Are we at peace with our own lives? Do we want more from life? Are there things from our past that continue to hold us back? If we want our children to have a better life, what does that mean, and why aren’t we searching for this better life for ourselves?

The fact is: we can’t lead our children down a path we’re unwilling to walk ourselves.

Our children need to see us exploring, discovering, learning, changing, and growing. They need to see how we work through failure. They need to know that our weaknesses define us as much as our strengths. They need to see us living in this place self awareness, not making excuses, or blaming others for our failures, but instead owning up to our mistakes and enlisting help from others when needed.Continue Reading

What Is the Purpose of Education?

November 11, 2013 By Alecia Baptiste 1 Comment

Is it admission into college?
Is it a prestigious career?
Is it high college entrance exam scores?
Is it the ability to be competitive in a global market?
Is it preparation for a life time of learning?
Is it preparation for living out our unique purpose?
Is it the key to making lots of money?

Throughout history there have been many ideas about the purpose of education. Every school or educational system begins with its philosophy of the purpose of education. It is the driving force for why they do what they do.

Unfortunately, few parents spend the time thinking about why they educate. I see parents new to homeschooling knee deep in curriculums and swayed by every “good idea”. We get so involved in all of the nuisances of educating, that we forget the big picture.

The big picture is the point. It’s the reason we’re willing to work so hard, and make so many sacrifices to educate our children. Without the big picture, we’re like a ship being tossed to and fro by every wave of ideas.Continue Reading

You may be a Candidate for Homeschooling

November 2, 2013 By Alecia Baptiste Leave a Comment

If I’ve heard it one time, I’ve heard it a thousand times.

“Oh I could never homeschool my children.”
“Wow, I really admire people who can do that!”
“I’m not that patient!”
“I’m not that disciplined!”
“My child would never listen to me.”

Over and over again I meet people who think I’m some amazing, and especially gifted person because I homeschool. I’m not. I’m just a mom who loves her children, and I believe that educating them at home is the best choice for us for now.

Yes, homeschooling is hard and not for the faint of heart, but “regular” people can do it. I’ve met hundreds of homeschooling families, and I can tell you that they aren’t any different from the non-homeschooling families I meet. They all have their struggles and challenges. They aren’t perfect. They aren’t perfectly disciplined. They aren’t especially gifted with patience.Continue Reading
